Uniting Sri Lankan Women: SLWAQ's Journey in Qatar
The idea of creating an association for women was conceptualized by a team of like-minded women who were constantly being approached by destitute workers and women seeking information on different resources in Qatar. As a result, SLWAQ was co-founded by Ms. Mahdiya Farook and Ms. Ishani Sandanayake under the patronage of H.E, Mr. Gokularangan, charge de affairs of the Sri Lankan embassy in the year 2020.
The association is the only registered Sri Lankan women’s group in Qatar which is affiliated with the embassy for the sole purpose of supporting and empowering Sri Lankan women residing and working in Qatar.
Sri Lankan women in Qatar did not have a platform to network and reach out to when in need. Hence, SLWAQ was established to support the society needs as well as provide a place where women can socialize, create opportunities and empower themselves to grow.
Our mission
Qatar provides a culturally rich, safe and economically viable environment for women of all ages to grow and flourish. Expatriates are provided almost equal opportunities, healthcare and facilities here. There are many opportunities for women where jobs and growth are available but they sometimes do not know how to get these. SLWAQ hopes to become an organization which will provide holistic support and assistance to all Sri Lankan women in Qatar regardless of their race, ethnicity or religion
Our Vision
SLWAQ has a long-term vision to uplift educational facilities for the Sri Lankan community and to create knowledge and skills center for women and not limited to the community in Qatar but in Sri Lanka as well.Â
Short term goals include supporting the growth of Sri Lankan women in Qatar by assisting, advising and coaching for career development, organizing events, seminars and educational workshops and creating career opportunities for women in need, guiding and helping small home businesses and giving networking platforms to thrive in their respective fields.
SLWAQ also expands their helping hands to children in need, specially for their education providing facilities such as educational tools, stationaries, free language coaching to help bridge the communication gaps, free counselling for passing out students on career path selections, selecting higher studies institutions and opportunities, sports, health and wellbeing of children and women.

ANNUAL General Meeting
Our journey so far
Year 2020 was a challenging year for the whole world as we had to brace with Covid 19 Pandemic. During the pandemic, many in the community suffered loss of employment, loss of relatives and loved ones with confinement to indoors and quarantine centers and limited activities.
SLWAQ helped repatriate destitute workers, supplied aids for women with financial needs, provided emotional counselling, helped collect oxygen cylinders with contributions from many Sri Lankans in Qatar to be sent to our country to support and facilitate Covid-19 patients in collaboration with Sri Lankan Embassy in Qatar.
Year 2021, was a recovery year with helping the community get on track with employments, health and wellbeing was given priority focusing on medial camps, beach cleaning sessions and events to re-connect the community leading and representing Sri Lankan community in local government events as advised and invited by Sri Lankan Embassy.
